At a Glance

Whether they are drawn from awesome forces of nature, the inner world of the mind, or harmony itself, the works on this program are connected by outside inspiration. Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture evokes the breathtaking sublimity of the stormy seas, crashing waves, and rocky citadels around Fingal’s Cave. Beethoven, driving toward the Romantic era, brings philosophical gravitas to abstract music, creating almost programmatic representations of emotions and states of mind. Vivaldi’s musical revelations wrought not one, but a collection of brilliant concertos that remain influential to this day for their inventive expressiveness. Given that the lives of these three composers span less than 200 years solidly rooted in tonal practice, their uniqueness, innovation, and mastery of expression within their respective styles is a testament to the communicative power of tonality—a power that remains salient centuries after these compositions came to fruition.
