CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS

Thomas Adès and Friends

An Afternoon of Song
Sunday, October 15, 2017 3 PM Zankel Hall
Thomas Adès by Brian Voce
Please note that due to illness, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote has regretfully withdrawn from this afternoon's concert. The revised program includes additional selections by Schubert, Dowland, and Thomas Adès, performed by Sally Matthews, Iestyn Davies, Joseph Kaiser, and Mr. Adès.

Thomas Adès
is a musical polymorph. His operas, orchestral works, and songs “take you to new places, via soundscapes and landscapes of feeling” (The Guardian). A brilliant pianist praised for his “velvety pianissimos and pungent fortissimo growls” (The New York Times), he has also performed recitals with many of the great singers of our time. A quartet of stars from the cast of his newest opera join him for an afternoon of song, featuring his own works and music by other composers.

At a Glance

This afternoon’s concert offers the rare opportunity to encounter a master composer recreating his own and other composers’ songs with a handpicked quartet of singers with whom he has worked closely. Since he and most of his singers hail from the UK, there is a generous selection of works by British composers—including the greatest English Baroque song composer, Henry Purcell, and the greatest modern songwriter, Benjamin Britten, as well as a set of four songs Adès wrote when he was only 18.

Indeed, youth is a subtext that links much of this program, for we also hear 12 songs by the immortal Franz Schubert, whose mortal life, tragically, ended at 31. Purcell was not much more fortunate, for his extraordinary musical creativity was over at 36. Whether in English or in German, this program is a connoisseur’s choice for lovers of the classical song literature.
