At a Glance

Renée Fleming’s eclectic program travels from the heights of German Romanticism to contemporary American song. And as her repertoire illustrates, musical Romanticism was not just a phenomenon of a few decades in the 19th century. Johannes Brahms represented classical Romanticism at its height, but Richard Strauss showed it was alive and well in a new guise in the early 20th century, and Egon Kornauth that it still survived in Austria in the 1930s. Turning to American vocal music of the present day, the spirit of Romanticism can be found as well in André Previn’s soaring, emotionally rich melodies. Only with the music of Caroline Shaw, a young composer of today and also an active performer in the avant-garde vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, do we experience a creative voice breaking free fully from that long-lived and addictive tradition.
